Here is Our Messy Church Newsletter October 2025
Our theme this month was God shines a light of courage in the shadowy places of fear.
We explored how God is near to us in dark times, even when things are strange or mysterious, God’s light shines for us in the darkness.
As a group the children made a Jacobs Ladder from card board tubes, with decorated angels ascending and descending. They individually made prayer candles, writing their own prayers on the paper ‘flames’. Other activities included making edible candles from swiss rolls (which were quickly eaten!) They also made shiny stars and used scratch art to decorate crosses illustrating how light can be hidden from darkness, but is still there even when it can’t be seen. We also made lighthouses out of paper cups because the beam is a source of light for those lost in the darkness.
Our joyful and energetic celebration ended with over 30 children enthusiastically singing with ‘This little light of mine’ and ‘Lovely Jubbly’.

What on earth is Messy Church???

Most people think of 'church' as people sitting quietly in rows, saying quiet prayers and listening to someone talking for quite a long time.
And church services can be like that...
but they don't have to be.
​
People can come together to enjoy being with God in all sorts of ways.
The important things are that
we are together
we are listening to God
we are learning more about God
whoever we are, and whether or not we like sitting quietly in rows and all that.
​
Messy Church
gives familes of all ages, shapes and compositions the chance to
enjoy crafts and other activities
take part in some simple worship
and to have breakfast together.
​
It's great for those of us who think with our hands
and don't much like sitting still.
​
It meets once a month on Saturday mornings*
10 - 11:30am
in St James' Church
(but not in the pews!)
